چکیده

Redundant disk arrays provide a way for achieving rapid recovery from media failures with a relatively low storage cost for large scale database systems requiring high availability. In this paper we propose a method for using redundant disk arrays to support rapid recovery from system crashes and transaction aborts in addition to their role in providing media failure recovery. A twin page scheme is used to store the parity information in the array so that the time for transaction commit processing is not degraded. Using an analytical model, we show that the proposed method achieves a significant increase in the throughput of database systems using redundant disk arrays by reducing the number of recovery operations needed to maintain the consistency of the database. !_,[,y_'r_ A._T _I_,K A_AY,S (illinois Univ ) D N92-257,_9 UriC] ::_s S 31 _,'? 0OV3_0 "This research was supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under Contract NAG 1-613 and in part by the Department of the Navy and managed by the Office of the Chief of Naval Research under Gra_at N00014-91-:I-1283. tPh. Backward Error Recovery in Redundant Disk Arrays

Redundant disk arrays are single fault tolerant, incorporating a layer of error handling not found in nonredundant disk systems. Recovery from these errors is complex, due in part to the large number of erroneous states the system may reach. The established approach to error recovery in disk systems is to transition directly from an erroneous state to completion. This technique, known as forwar...

Site Partitioning for Redundant Arrays of Distributed Disks

Redundant arrays of distributed disks (RADD) can be used in a distributed computing system or database system to provide recovery in the presence of disk crashes and temporary and permanent failures of single sites. In this paper, we look at the problem of partitioning the sites of a distributed storage system into redundant arrays in such a way that the communication costs for maintaining the ...

Dynamic Multiple Parity (DMP) Disk Array for Serial Transaction Processing

ÐThe performance of today's database systems is usually limited by the speed of their I/O devices. Fast I/O systems can be built from an array of low cost disks working in parallel. This kind of disk architecture is called RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks). RAID promises improvement over SLED (Single Large Expensive Disks) in performance, reliability, power consumption, and scalabili...

A Structured Approach to Redundant Disk Array Implementation (CMU-CS-96-137)

Error recovery in redundant disk arrays is typically performed in an ad hoc fashion, requiring architecture-specific code which limits extensibility and is difficult to verify. In this paper, we describe a technique for automating the execution of redundant disk array operations, including recovery from errors, independent of array architecture. Our approach employs a graphical representation o...

Redundant Arrays of IDE Drives

We report tests of redundant arrays of IDE disk drives for use in offline high energy physics data analysis. Parts costs of total systems using commodity EIDE disks are now at the $4000 per Terabyte level. Disk storage prices have now decreased to the point where they equal the cost per Terabyte of Storage Technology tape silos. The disks, however, offer far better granularity; even small insti...
